This article is relevant if your organization is reconsidering NetSuite add-on products, exploring AI-assisted development, or seeking stronger application adoption through software tailored to people and their business objectives.
TL;DR Summary
AI development tools such as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex are changing the economics of business applications. Experiences that once suggested expensive add-ons or substantial custom development projects are becoming more practical to produce within an organization’s specific operating model.
At first, AI augmentation will improve how people interact with applications. In due course, agentic AI will perform more work directly, often without needing a conventional user interface. Yet agents still require strong data structures, explicit business logic, sound controls, and clearly defined authority.
Humans will remain in the loop because organizations depend on responsible actors who make promises, exercise judgment, and remain accountable. NetSuite is well-positioned for this future because it can be fitted to support both intelligent agents and the people who govern them.
Background
Most ERP implementations begin with a standard platform and established best practices. The common argument is that we should not invent these practices because they are vanilla and represent good process. This approach provides proven frameworks that reduce risk and accelerate deployment.
Yet the standard application is only a starting point.
Organizations and Individuals are not Uniform
No two businesses operate exactly alike. A distributor may have distinctive fulfillment requirements. A manufacturer may depend on specialized planning processes. A professional services firm may need carefully designed project controls. A subscription company may face complex revenue and renewal obligations.
Even within a single organization, individuals in different roles pursue different objectives. A salesperson, sales manager, controller, operations leader, and executive may all work with the same customer information, yet each needs a different expression of that information. People in roles have different interpretations, working to uphold commitments.
The Economics of Make vs. Buy have Changed
In my earlier article, Rethinking Make vs. Buy for High Performance NetSuite Applications in the AI Era, I argued that AI-assisted development materially lowers the cost of moving from a business concept to a working application.
The NetSuite platform has long supported alternative interfaces and high-performance applications. The practical constraint was the time and coordination required to design and deliver them. Modern AI-assisted tools are moving that boundary, making experimentation and refinement more economically attractive.
NetSuite Personalization Reflects a Broader Trend
Applications exist to serve the objectives of individuals holding roles.
Consider a CRM application. It may need to capture every prospective lead, develop a profile of the prospect, understand emerging opportunities, guide sales activity, and help management assess whether the sales organization is producing sufficient revenue.
These objectives are related but not identical. An interface optimized for rapid lead entry may not help a sales manager understand pipeline quality. An executive dashboard may be useful to leadership while doing little for the salesperson responsible for maintaining the underlying information.
The database must hold these relationships together logically. Logic exists to enforce rules. Yet application success also depends on whether people are willing to supply good information in a timely manner.
That willingness is strongly influenced by the experience of using the application.
Personalized Medicine as a Model
For decades, medical treatment relied heavily on broad population averages. Personalized medicine changes that approach by using genetics, medical history, lifestyle, and other patient-specific factors to understand how an individual may respond.
The guiding objective is to deliver the right medicine to the right patient at the right time. Genetic and molecular insights help identify the most appropriate treatment, while advances in pharmaceutical manufacturing point toward something even more significant: drugs produced with dosages, release profiles, and combinations designed specifically for the individual patient.
To better understand the phenomenon, see this article: Recent Advances in Personalized Medicine
Business applications face a similar challenge. Standard software embodies useful general knowledge, but the experience may need to be fitted to the organization and the responsible business actor.
Localized Manufacturing and 3D Printing
Localized manufacturing offers another useful analogy. Mass production derives power from standardization, scale, and repeatability. Additive manufacturing makes it more practical to create specialized products closer to the point of demand.
Like personalized medicine, see how this phenomenon is shaping manufacturing in this article: 3D Printing Revolution: How Localized Manufacturing Is Reshaping Global Trade
The lesson is not that mass production disappears. Instead, the economic boundary between a standardized product and a tailored product moves.
AI-assisted application development is producing a similar change. Standard ERP functionality remains valuable, but more specialized experiences can now be created and refined at a lower cost.
A Fit-for-Purpose NetSuite Application Strategy
NetSuite is not simply an out-of-the-box ERP product. When I hear prospective clients think of it that way, I try to help them understand that they are missing the platform’s real capacity. It is a general-purpose business platform designed to be fitted. Fitting is one of the fundamental exercises to unlock its potential.
Its accounting controls, transaction structures, permissions, workflows, analytics, scripting framework, and database relationships provide a governed foundation. Around that foundation, organizations can shape how different actors engage with information and fulfill their responsibilities.
The goal is always some interpretation of better attainment of business objectives. Fitting through configuration and a degree of customization serve the business.
A practical strategy includes several principles:
- Begin with the objective: Determine the business outcome before discussing screens, fields, dashboards, or AI capabilities.
- Build a sound information model: An attractive interface cannot compensate for weak record relationships, inconsistent definitions, or ambiguous logic.
- Design around the responsible actor: Understand what the individual in a role must notice, decide, update, approve, authorize, or escalate.
- Preserve standard patterns where they work: Native frameworks reduce risk, cost, and maintenance obligations. They are the low-cost opening move.
- Fit the experience where friction hinders adoption: When users avoid the system or maintain shadow spreadsheets, we should be open to the possibility that the default experience may be undermining the application’s purpose.
- Use AI to accelerate craftsmanship: Use those new tools! Yet, faster code generation does not eliminate the need for analysis, security, governance, testing, and maintainability.
From AI-Augmented Interfaces to Agentic Work
The first practical expression of AI in business applications is augmentation. An AI-augmented interface can summarize a transaction, explain an exception, identify missing information, recommend a next action, or present complex data in terms appropriate to a particular role.
These capabilities can improve user adoption. Instead of requiring people to master NetSuite’s way of doing things, a tailored application can help each actor focus on the decisions and commitments specific to their role.
Our recent change-order work illustrates how AI-augmented interfaces can make complex NetSuite processes clearer and more governed. Our underlying logic and data model were sound. But with a new interface, potential was unlocked! See my recent article, How AI-Augmented Interfaces Make NetSuite Change Orders Clearer, Faster, and More Governed.
How Agentic AI Means Roles are Evolving
Yet AI-driven augmentation is only the beginning.
As AI becomes more agentic, software will perform more work on behalf of the organization. Agents may monitor transactions, identify exceptions, gather information, draft communications, prepare recommendations, initiate workflows, or execute authorized actions.
In many cases, an agent does not need a user interface. It needs trusted data, explicit business rules, clear authority, and strong operational boundaries.
This makes the quality of the ERP foundation more important, not less. An agent acting on ambiguous data or poorly modeled business logic can produce errors at a much greater speed. Customer status, contractual obligations, inventory availability, financial meaning, approval authority, and exception rules must be logically represented.
Where a Default NetSuite User Interface Thwarts a Sound Model
Our work on AI-augmented manufacturing planning points toward this progression. NetSuite’s underlying MRP model is sound. But its expression to end users through the default interface is woefully unusable for the typical planner. Here, we transformed the experience. See my recent article, The Next Frontier in NetSuite Manufacturing: AI-Augmented Planning and Control.
NetSuite can become the governed business context in which both humans and agents operate. This is the power of the platform.
The User Interface where Humans Remain in the Loop
Organizations are systems of promises and commitments.
A salesperson promises to follow up with a prospect. A buyer commits the organization to a purchase. A controller attests to financial information. An operations leader commits to fulfilling an order. An executive accepts responsibility for broader business outcomes.
AI may increasingly perform the underlying tasks, but responsible actors still authorize, supervise, interpret, and remain accountable.
Thus, the user interface argument does not disappear. It evolves.
The interface becomes the point where a responsible actor understands the situation, exercises judgment, grants authority, resolves ambiguity, or accepts a commitment. It may become simpler, conversational, and situational. It may appear only when human judgment is required.
Given the way the agents will become part of the workforce, the key application-design questions become:
- Who is responsible for the outcome?
- What promise does that role hold?
- What work can the agent perform safely?
- Where must a human exercise judgment?
- What information does the responsible actor need at that moment?
This is the deeper meaning of application personalization. It is not simply a preferred layout. It is shaping software so that responsible actors can competently fulfill their commitments.
Building NetSuite Around Responsible Actors
Since 2009, our firm has developed NetSuite Accelerator Templates that reflect a philosophy toward end-user engagement. At the time of this writing, we offer more than 75 templates to active clients at no additional license charge. They represent reusable applications, algorithms, and design patterns that help fit NetSuite to real operating requirements. We help our clients get to the desired outcomes, and we give them everything we can to shape that experience.
AI is helping all of us move even faster, but the tools are not the central story. The real value comes from listening carefully, modeling business relationships correctly, understanding accounting and operations, and executing with discipline.
The economics of software development are changing. The division of work between people and machines is changing as well.
Organizations that invest in sound data models, clear business logic, responsible roles, and internal competence will be positioned to benefit from both shifts. They can create better experiences for people today while preparing intelligent agents to perform more work tomorrow.
