Why SugarSync is Superior to DropBox

Infrastructure Technical

I have been using SugarSync now for about 3 years. It has changed the way I think about storing data. No longer do I think about needing access to a server to get to all my central files. Yes, I still think about a single store that holds all of my data and gets backed up — but I don’t think about needing access to that at all times.  Given my passion for NetSuite and Cloud Computing, SugarSync solves the file problem by leveraging the Cloud — yet in important ways that are not obvious to the average computer user.

DropBox Popularity Explained

I love to watch my wife to learn how the mainstream uses computers. She uses DropBox at work to get files to her other computing devices. She feels it has liberated her from needing to have her laptop on sales calls. She can use an tablet computer or a phone to get to the files. Or she can install DropBox on her home computer and then get access to the work file.

Why SugarSync is Superior to DropBox

The key design characteristic that makes SugarSync superior to DropBox is the fact that SugarSync honors my file system layout. Meaning, I don’t have to drag files to my “DropBox” in order to share them. Instead, I pick a folder in my (proudly) organized directory structure and simply “share”. Next, I can add as many devices as I would like to SugarSync. I can then selectively determine which devices sync with my directory shares. My tablets, androids and Apple devices can all participate. And the sync is pratically transparent. Guess what? That central computer can be shutoff.  Nothing needs to be running to make all this work.

Other SugarSync Features I Enjoy

There are other features (these are not official names but how I describe what they do for me) that I find very handy:

  • Share Folder with Others:  I can deem a folder shareable with third parties.  What a great way to share files.  Email reports tell parties about daily file activities.  Excellent for shared project work.
  • Send Link: When I have large files, I no longer attach and email the file . Instead, I send a hyperlink generated by SugarSync that allows the recipient to download the file.   This helps me control activities and helps keep my email (and the recipients) fast with minimal storage requirements.
  • Versions: Sugarsync keeps a history of file updates.  Excellent when I need to go back in time.
  • Offline: Even if I don’t sync a directory with my device, I can load a SugarSync manager (or a web browser) and see all the files under management.  I can then get the files I need, download them to the local device, or email them to others.
Finally, I am interested in one more technology that gets close to SugarSync.  It is Google Drive.  Stay tuned for another article shortly where I have used Google Drive with Sugar Sync.
