Reactivate Google Talk Plug-in for Chrome

Technical

If you are like me, you use Chrome all the time and you enjoy the integration between Google Talk and the outbound Phone Dialer.  As of April 2015, you may be getting a “Please download the voice plugin to make a call.” message. This implies that the software isn’t installed.

Why Google Talk Plug-in Stops Working

Chrome is phasing out support for an old school browser architecture called “NPAPI”.   The browser now disables this plug-ing by default rendering Google Talk Plug-in inoperative.

Fix Google Talk Plug-in for Chrome

The solution is temporary as Google is phasing our all support for NPAPI.  But in the meantime, you can reactivate Google Talk by going into an advanced chrome setting and re-enabling NPAPI.  Go to chrome://flags/#enable-npapi and look for the “Enable NPAPI” feature.  Restart the browser and you are back in business.
